While many of today's Xbox Games Showcase reveals like the Persona 3 Reload announcement came with tentative availability information attached, South of Midnight has yet to be treated to a release window. Whether that plot has anything to do with South of Midnight's premise remains to be seen, but it could definitely fit a setup of a dark fantasy game set in the American South. ![]() The 2012 book tells the story of seven survivors that emerge from a mysterious traffic accident in the middle of nowhere unscathed, but "somehow different," as per its official description. The game's title is possibly a reference to Somewhere South of Midnight, a horror fiction novel by Stephen Laws. ![]() Since the Canadian studio made no indication to the contrary, it's plausible that South of Midnight will either feature linear levels or a semi-open world akin to We Happy Few. David Sears, the game's creative director, described South of Midnight as "an honest love letter" to the American South, a setting that he feels is underrepresented in gaming. It's hence been confirmed that South of Midnight will be a third-person action adventure starring Hazel, a heroine on a mission to capture a variety of "supernatural creatures" that found their way to her world. And while the video didn't reveal much about the game, Xbox subsequently shared a few more details about Compulsion's upcoming project. The South of Midnight teaser was CGI-only, which seemingly contradicted a recent promise from Xbox Games Marketing VP Aaron Greenberg, who said that there will be no such trailers from first-party Xbox studios at today's showcase. So, even though South of Midnight's art style seems reminiscent of Tim Burton's stop-motion animation, it would appear that the atmosphere of Compulsion's next game will also draw from both gospel blues and Southern Gothic fantasy. Beforehand, the video opens on what looks like a giant corpse playing Death Don't Have No Mercy by Blind Gary Davis on a guitar. James Anthony 'Jim' Bonacci (born September 27, 1979, age 43) is the creator of Total Jerkface, Divine Intervention, Happy Wheels, GameTest12 and the Flash movies Beautiful Day and Wheres My Bike. Today's announcement of South of Midnight seemingly confirms that rumor, not least because the game's two-minute teaser ends with a giant monster shadow looming over its protagonist in a swampy Southern setting. South of Midnight is only Compulsion's third-ever game, but the studio's puzzle-platformer Contrast and BioShock-like FPS We Happy Few already generated enough buzz for Xbox Games Studios to acquire it back in 2018. The reveal was part of the June 11 Xbox Games Showcase that also featured in-game footage of Fable and the announcement of a new Fallout 76 Expedition, among dozens of other unveilings. The game is directed by Czech artist, animator, and designer Jaromír Plachý, whose teams previously created Botanicula (2012) and CHUCHEL (2018).Compulsion Games announced South of Midnight, its next project that's presumably been in development since the Canadian studio launched We Happy Few in 2018. He won’t be all alone on this trip, though - there are many smiley faces to meet, adorable bunnies to slice with a guillotine greet, or an elusive football to chase. This time, players will find themselves playing as a little boy who experiences a terrible nightmare, passing through three unique worlds filled with playful tasks and puzzles. ![]() Happy Game is a psychedelic horror adventure that departs significantly from Amanita’s charming, family-friendly style. Happy Game was just revealed today with its debut trailer, being part of Nintendo’s latest Indie World presentation, and is releasing on Nintendo Switch and PC next spring. Sweet Dreams Await. :) Amanita Design, the Czech independent studio behind Machinarium, Samorost, or Creaks, is announcing Happy Game, a new psychedelic horror game from Jaromír Plachý, creator of Botanicula and CHUCHEL. Happy Game launches on PC and Nintendo Switch next spring. As with much of Amanita’s work, Happy Game doesn’t have rich gameplay to fall back. It’s a disappointing turn, and it had me longing for the kind of extreme discomfort the earlier segments evoked. Creators of CHUCHEL and Machinarium enter horror. It feels like the beguiling game about childhood fears and purity shattered has given way to a much simpler one about being menaced by demons.
